GRACEMERE
The township is located along the Tropic of Capricorn 10km west of Rockhampton. Currently the local area is experiencing rapid growth in residential, industrial and commercial developments with 13 new housing developments for 1300 new residential home sites, 2 shopping complexes and the determined push to develop an industrial corridor. The current mining boom in Central Queensland has seen many mining families relocate to Gracemere.
Gracemere was originally founded by pastoralist brothers Charles and William Archer in 1853. Their heritage listed homestead still stands today. Just outside town, the recently renovated Gracemere Exhibition Complex houses the Sale Yards and Austadium - the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. The cattle industry (grazing) is, with its long tradition in the area, remains a major local industry.
Established in 1871, Gracemere State School is the oldest primary school in the local area. It is bordered by a railway line and two main arterial roads. The original students planted bunya pines in front of the first school building. Although this structure was removed in 1918, the grand old bunya pines still stand proudly along the fence line today.
Gracemere State School has a proud history. Many grandparents and parents of our current student enrolment attended Gracemere State School themselves. The community holds traditional values in high regard and expects the school community to do the same. Presently, the school caters for approximately 250 children from Prep to Year 7. The ten classes are supported by visiting specialists, and work closely with Aboriginal community members both within and out of school hours.
